Fresh news on politics and government in Greece
Provided by AGPThe governments of Türkiye, Bangladesh, Brazil, Indonesia, Spain, Colombia, Libya, the Maldives, Pakistan, and Jordan united in their rebuke, declaring they "strongly" condemned Israel's aggression against what they described as "a peaceful civilian humanitarian initiative aimed at drawing the international community's attention to the humanitarian catastrophe faced by the Palestinian people."
The joint statement expressed deep alarm over Israel's pattern of intervening against aid convoys in international waters, condemning what the ministers characterized as a relentless campaign of hostile acts directed at civilian vessels and humanitarian workers. "These attacks, including assaults on vessels and the arbitrary detention of activists, constitute a clear violation of international law and international humanitarian law," it said.
The ten-nation bloc voiced grave concern over the welfare of civilians aboard the flotilla, issuing an urgent call for the unconditional release of all those held in detention and demanding that their fundamental rights and dignity be fully honored.
The ministers further warned that the repeated targeting of peaceful humanitarian missions signals a deliberate and dangerous contempt for international law and the universally recognized principle of freedom of navigation. Their statement pressed the global community to honor both its legal obligations and moral imperatives — safeguarding civilians and humanitarian operations while taking decisive action to end impunity and establish accountability for the violations committed.
The condemnation comes after the Israeli military stormed and seized the Gaza-bound Global Sumud humanitarian flotilla in international waters on Monday, detaining approximately 100 activists as the convoy pushed to break Israel's blockade on the Palestinian enclave. In a separate earlier incident on April 29, Israeli forces attacked the flotilla off the coast of the Greek island of Crete, subsequently deporting the activists found on board.
