Greece Greenlights Acquisition of Two Used Italian FREMM Frigates

(MENAFN) Greece has approved the acquisition of two second-hand FREMM-class frigates from Italy, according to local reports on Monday, as part of a broader effort to strengthen its naval capabilities.

The decision was made during a meeting of the country’s Government Council for National Security, chaired by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Athens.

Alongside the frigate purchase, the council also endorsed upgrades for Greece’s German-built MEKO-class frigates, marking a wider modernization push for the navy, according to reports.

Officials additionally approved the rollout of a National Strategy for Unmanned Vehicles covering the 2026–2030 period, aimed at integrating advanced autonomous systems into defense planning.

During the same meeting, participants reportedly reviewed regional security developments, including tensions in the Middle East, the situation in Lebanon, and instability linked to the Strait of Hormuz.

Discussions also touched on reported plans by Türkiye to advance its maritime doctrine known as “Blue Homeland,” amid broader concerns over shifting naval dynamics in the region.
