Rubio Says Russian Lab Incident Requires Monitoring Yet No Alarm
“I do not think it is cause for alarm, but it is cause for focus and a cause to just keep an eye on,” Rubio told reporters before beginning a diplomatic trip to Europe that includes visits to Iceland, Greece and Portugal.
According to information shared by Moscow, Rubio said a worker at the facility became infected, leading local authorities to impose a quarantine as a precaution against possible transmission.
Although travel between the United States and Russia remains significantly restricted, Rubio stressed that infectious pathogens can spread quickly if they escape containment. “So we are watching and monitoring it closely.”
His comments came after reports emerged about the death of a female employee at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute. The woman had reportedly been diagnosed with “pneumonia of unknown etiology.”
According to local reports, the 28-year-old died following an accident, after which hospitals introduced quarantine measures and a factory imposed mask requirements. Russia’s consumer protection agency, however, said the epidemiological situation remained stable.
