Lithuania Puts Security, Competitiveness at Center of EU Presidency

(MENAFN) Lithuania plans to make European security and competitiveness key priorities when it assumes the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union, President Gitanas Nauseda said Monday.

Nauseda discussed the upcoming presidency with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during talks in Athens, after which the two leaders addressed the media.

He said Lithuania’s leadership of the Council during the first half of 2027 was among the main issues raised during the meeting.

“Europe faces security challenges and growing uncertainty. Therefore, our presidency will focus on making Europe stronger and more secure and increasing its competitiveness,” he said.

Mitsotakis said the discussions also covered the shared agenda of the EU presidency trio made up of Ireland, Lithuania and Greece, according to reports.

He said the three countries were united in their support for a Europe that is free, democratic, strong, secure, prosperous and competitive.

The Greek prime minister also described the protection of the sovereignty and sovereign rights of EU and NATO members as a shared responsibility, particularly for countries on the bloc’s front line, including Lithuania and Greece.

Mitsotakis expressed Greece’s “absolute solidarity” with Lithuania following a series of hybrid attacks and called for a coordinated response across Europe.
